New 3D animation diploma program

Another animation diploma program is coming to Okanagan College this fall. The diploma course will focus on 2D, computerized 2D and 3D animation technology, helping students develop imaginative creativity and programming skills.

The first group of students will start the program this September, completing in April 2019. The provincial government will give $250,000 to bolster the first year of the two-year program.

“There is a dynamic animation industry thriving in the Okanagan,” said Premier Christy Clark, MLA for Westside-Kelowna. “This certificate program is an initial move towards an incredible profession in a developing field, both here at home or anyplace on the world.”

The Few 2D Animators Left Are Working On Projection Mapping

Completely hand-drawn animated features aren’t practiced anymore at animation studios, however some studios still discovers its value for its few remaining paper-and-pencil followers.

The most recent gig for these veterans is the live show “Happily Ever After,” planned to be released on May 12 at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Other than the firecrackers and fireworks, the show will highlight projection-mapped hand-drawn animation that will show up on Cinderella’s Castle. Disney Imagineering executive Michael Jung depicts the show as a “superb good night for our visitors.”

The key illustrators on the venture are Mark Henn, Eric Goldberg, and Randy Haycock, and they’re animating characters from Moana, Brave, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and The Frog, and Aladdin, among others.
