A few comments regarding your concerns with ArchiCAD on the single database file structure. The ability for multiple users to share the single file was introduced almost 12 years ago in 1997 with the introduction of Graphisoft's ArchiCAD 5.1, also known as ArchiCAD for Teamwork. The Teamwork functionality allows users to "check out" portions of the model and work on specific views, areas, layers or combination of these. More information may be found here:

Teamwork has continued to be developed over the years and has proven to be a robust model sharing environment. Additionally, there are other methods of collaboration such as "module" files that may be used with the single file database and multiple files may be merged into a master file.

Regarding market share, Graphisoft's worldwide market share in the 3D AEC/BIM market is quite large, notably in Europe where it is more the standard then other products and in most countries market share is in the 40%-70% range. Here in the US, market share has seen continually growth and in BIM products in actual use remains the leader in projects completed.
